I've nothing against spending money on infrastructure projects, but what I want are the right projects that will give the best return in terms of quality of life and wider economic benefits, as well as do something about the issue they were meant to deal with, in this case transport. If you follow Benjamin Mulvihill's arguments, any infrastructure project will do: just spend the money. In that case, let's spend the money on something that can start employing NEETS now and not many years in the future. We could build more houses, or repair buildings in decay, or construct more public parks, or - following Benjamin's argument - construct ziggurats, even, provided that creates jobs for young people. I do think HS2 has to stand on its own feet: is this the best use of public money to improve our transport infrastructure or are there other things we could use it on which would do more, sooner. If the business case for it as a transport link is that shaky and the prime reason for it is to stimulate the economy, there are many other ways to use such money which will be far more productive of jobs.
