More rubbish: best thing about wheelie bins is the wheels, great-grandmother tells council

🕔24.Apr 2013

Naturally, since there are no wheelie bins yet in Birmingham, the intrepid reporters had to travel far and wide to source their story. That is, they went to Sandwell and Walsall where wheelie bins have been used for years without causing riots in the streets.

Here is the press release:

Pensioner Jessica Ferguson loves her wheelie bins – and says there’s no way she would swap back to black sacks for her rubbish.

Great-grandmother Ms Ferguson lives in West Bromwich, where wheelie bins are in operation, as they are in the majority of council areas across Britain. And she was happy describe how they are miles better than the bad old days of black sacks and spilt rubbish.

Ms Ferguson, who has ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren, said: “One of the best things about my wheelie bins are the wheels! I’m 72, live on my own and have a plate in my arm with 16 screws in it, so there’s no way I could carry the rubbish without a bin on wheels.

“Wheelie bins are great because dogs, cats and foxes can’t get at them and rip them open like with black bin bags. The lids stay shut so there’s less smell, and because wheelie bins are tipped straight into the refuse lorry there’s no rubbish lying in the street and no hygiene problems.

Ms Ferguson said residents in Birmingham had nothing to worry about as the city’s first suburbs start receiving wheelie bins later next month. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend wheelie bins to anyone – once you’ve got them, there’s no way you’d want to turn the clock back.”

Mum-of-two Michala Guest, aged 39, who lives in Orchard Hills, Walsall with her husband, Gareth, 43, said that wheelie bins help her whole family to get involved in recycling.
