Old Joe’s Almanac: The Aldens
After years of heartbreak, Birmingham’s premier Tory family has half a grip on power. Cllr Robert ‘Bobby’ Alden is the deputy leader of the city’s Conservative group of councillors and fighting to take over from Lord Mike Whitby next May.
But as in all soap operas, there’s a big if. First, Alden the Younger has to defend his Erdington seat at the 2014 civic elections and can expect a tough challenge from Labour. Second, his age, he is ridiculously young by Tory standards, means he is by no means a shoo-in for the Tory leadership.
Sitting next to him in the council chamber is his mum Deirdre Alden, famous for contesting and losing the Edgbaston parliamentary constituency more times than anyone can recall. Her husband John Alden lost his Harborne seat a couple of years ago and had to fall back on life as a tax accountant. But things could finally be looking up for the Aldens.
