The planned stitch up by democratically unaccountable individiuals has to be opposed.Only a West Mid Region wide democratically accountable body including the mets and shire counties can hope to deliver a more inclusive and sustainable Localised economic development and have the political clout to take on Westminster and Whitehall as a equal partner in an increasingly devolved and probrably federal UK.We need a far more localised community based local government which would prevent the same old poiticians and business leaders reappearing for decades.

Re- engineering the sub regions for greater economic benefit, consistency of opportunity and to place the whole West Midlands in a higher profile would seem to be an idea worthy of support. David

Paul,

Whatever the merits of a merger, even a larger, regional one you missed an important point. Can the LEP’s do this themselves?

My understanding is that the LEP’s were set up by the national (English) government and all their founding is via HM Treasury etc. One wonders if the “dead hand” of Whitehall would want to see a merger.
