Sorry, Administrator - the lack of mention was due to the blog being about a different topic from the one you'd have preferred. You are, however, right about the decline and, by European standards, embarrassingly low level of individual party membership, and for anyone interested there are some useful stats and graphs in a recent H/Commons Briefing Paper - www.parliament.uk/briefing-papers/SN05125.pdf‎.

All this concentration on who is pitting who up for election and not a single mention of the immensely disproportionate selection process as to who (in percentage terms) get to select candidates in the first place!

Based on the government's own web-site, there is barely one per-cent of the electorate who, collectively, are members of the major Parties combined. Hence, and regardless of which Party, there is less than half of one percent people who have any real say in who is going to represent their constituency. Which means that any Party, of whatever colour or blend, is hypocritical in denouncing any system which actually introduces a democratic voting system into who should represent any electorate.

The current electoral system and mechanism of cronyism is very, very, very far removed from anything which would otherwise masquerade as "democracy".
