Sorry but Birmingham Wastelands, sorry Heartlands was a non starter from the outset, if an ingenious concept. The HS2 station is definitely in the wrong place, after all they built New St in the 1850s for good reason, and it served Birmingham's very compact city centre well. The analysis of rail policy over the last 50 years is spot on as Birmingham had very little rail commutiong, the PTE changed that with the low cost Cross City line, which for 15 years ran with 1959-60 generation diesels. With bus deregulation rail has become a much better option, even on lines only offering half hourly services, if they could all be 15-20 minutes, that would give Birmingham almost comparable services to Liverpool. The Curzon street site is a terminus too, which in effect puts Birmingham at the end of a siding. It's not clever!
