Digby, Lord Jones of Birmingham, having said he’s not intending to stand to be Birmingham’S elected mayor, urges citizens to vote yes in the referendum. We need a mayor to ensure the city survives in ‘Asia’s century,’ he says.


Amongst an avalanche of coverage for all things elected mayoral this morning from The Times to Radio WM, Digby, Lord Jones of Birmingham broke cover to declare that he is more than prepared to run for mayor – but only of the West Midlands.

He told BBC local radio that if there was a role of ‘Metro Mayor’ covering not just Birmingham but much of the West Midlands, then he would “consult with the unemployed, the ethnic community and the wealthy” to put together a mayoral bid.

Word reaches us that the Mayoral candidacies of both and are alive and, erm, well alive anyway.

Meanwhile, Digby (like Madonna and Lulu just one name suffices) is still not quite ruling himself out.

Our prediction?  None of these will make the starting gates.

Out of the blue, Digby, Lord Jones of Birmingham, has popped up to claim his home city is about to lose out to arch-rival Manchester.

Could the solution be an elected mayor for the city, Digby? Someone with impeccable local credentials, top-level cabinet experience and a high media profile?
