Birmingham City Council leader Mike Whitby is facing a possible inquiry over claims that his new website breaches strict rules preventing politicians using local authority resources for “self-promotion”.

Hours after the site, .uk was launched, a complaint about its content was lodged by former council Director of Corporate Governance and Monitoring Officer Mirza Ahmad.

Dr Ahmad wrote to the city’s Chief Legal Officer David Tatlow urging him to take action and “address the breach at once”, or face a formal complaint about Coun Whitby’s conduct to the Birmingham Standards Committee, which has powers

Former Birmingham City Council legal executive has  confirmed one of the worst kept secrets in local politics – he will run as an Independent candidate for elected mayor, if the May referendum delivers a yes vote.

Dr Ahmad chose Twitter to state that it was no longer the case that he may put himself forward, but that he ‘will stand’ if the poll on May 3 delivers a clear vote in favour of replacing the council leader and cabinet with a mayor.

In an exchange with blogger Politics in Brum, he declared: “Underestimate the Independent candidate (s) at your peril”.

The statements are in contrast to Dr Ahmad’s previous position, as set out in the Chamberlain News, that whether or not he would stand was an inappropriate question in advance of the referendum. However, he did couch that with words familiar to generations of politicians, that if friends and colleagues asked him to consider…..then he’d have to think very carefully.

Following on from my on the Chamberlain News, I have been asked by a number of people in (and out of) the city as to whether I will stand as the Elected Mayor for Birmingham.

This is, of course, an inappropriate question – at this stage – as Birmingham must first vote in a referendum to have an elected mayor before any candidates can stand to become an Elected Mayor.

It is, however, true that I have had lots of positive feedback and been encouraged to stand

Let me make it clear for the record: I have supported the principle of having a strong directly elected mayor for major cities of Britain since I visited the USA on a study tour, with other top local government officials, in search of the “enabling council” in the early 1990′s.
