Tough Tory choices for a Sutton Coldfield by-election

Cameron must fear resurgent Labour and UKIP in the wings if Mitchell goes to EU

suttonWith the Eastleigh by-election debacle still ringing around his ears, David Cameron can hardly be relishing another challenging electoral contest even in what may at first glance appear to be a rock-solid Tory seat.

But the prime minister’s reported intention to make ‘plebgate’ MP Andrew Mitchell a European Commissioner opens up the possibility of a tasty tussle for votes in Sutton Coldfield.

It is true that any election to find a replacement for Mr Mitchell would not have to be held until next year, but the benefit of having plenty of time to plan for a by-election does not necessarily mean that the Conservative candidate will be victorious.

After all, the party had many months to prepare for Eastleigh given the clear likelihood that Liberal Democrat MP and former Energy Minister Chris Hune would eventually be forced to resign. But the generous timescale appeared to make little difference to the Tory high command who allowed 2010 General Election loser Maria Hutchings, a most unsuitable choice, to be the candidate.

Ms Hutchings duly presided over a 14 per cent collapse in the Tory vote as Lib Dem Mike Thornton cruised to victory. UKIP candidate Diana James came second with the benefit of a 19 per cent swing against the Liberal Democrats.

It can safely be assumed there will be no shortage of Conservatives throwing their hat in the ring

Doubling overseas aid would be ‘good deal’ for taxpayer

Andrew Mitchell tells Tories to fight for extra spending on third world countries

mitchellAndrew Mitchell has returned to the political fray for the first time since being forced to quit the Government over the ‘plebgate’ affair to call for a significant increase in the UK overseas aid budget.

The former International Development Secretary urged cabinet members to “stand up and make the case” for additional spending amid signs of increasing hostility from the Conservative grassroots.

In an interview with the Financial Times the Sutton Coldfield MP said ministers could “look the British taxpayer in the eye” in the knowledge that the money was being well spent in countries such as Ethiopia, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

His comments were delivered amid growing nervousness among Tory MPs about the Government’s commitment to spend an additional £2.5 billion on overseas aid this year, taking the total budget to

Waseem Zaffar gets the POTY!

Chamberlain News readers make Labour rising star our person of the Year

So congrats to Labour councillor Waseem Zaffar, on his landslide victory in the Chamberlain News Person of the Year awards – or the Chamber POTYs as we like to call them.

The young councillor  - who boasts almost as many Facebook followers as Lady Gaga – is even now celebrating his momentous victory by touring the streets of East Handsworth and Lozells in an open-topped bus.

He will be presented with his prize of an engraved enameled late 19th century chamber pot that probably might of been used by Joe Chamberlain himself – as soon as we win that bid on ebay.

Zaffar’s victory is all the sweeter as he held off challenges from his own party leader, Sir Albert Bore, as well as the doughty efforts of former Lord Mayor Anita Ward. Even the pre-Christmas rehabilitation of Andrew Mitchell couldn’t help the Sutton Tory MP rise any higher than fourth place in a poll that reportedly saw a greater turnout than the elected mayor referendum and the police commissioner election combined.

Cllr Zaffar took a break from his victory celebrations to tell The Chamberlain News: “Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for me. I’m flattered. But Lozells & East Handsworth is full of people of the year. They’re the ones who deserve awards. I accept it on their behalf, although it all seems a bit potty to me.”

For those of you watching in black and white, here are those POTY results in full:

Chamber POTY: Jack Dromey (sort of), by Kevin Johnson

Could any of our city MPs be POTY....next year?

The city’s MPs are not often lauded for their contribution to the Birmingham brand and our economic progress. Ask Sid and Doris on Broad Street or even Colmore Row and they will struggle to name any of the city’s representatives in Parliament. The MPs have never operated successfully as a group to lobby on behalf of city/city region and seem to have no more than a fleeting involvement in the issues that go beyond their direct constituency interests.

That is changing, slowly. Elsewhere on the Files, there will be

Exclusive: Andrew Mitchell ‘wants his old job back’

Sutton MP eyes a return to international aid, says Steve Dyson

As the Metropolitan Police continues to struggle to explain the lie a serving officer allegedly told about witnessing pleb-gate, sources close to Andrew Mitchell say that he now wants his old job back.

Not the position of Chief Whip – that was his new job in which he served just over a month before the national newspaper bandwagon led by The Sun and Daily Telegraph created so much pressure that he felt he should resign.

No, Mitchell is said to
